The Big Bonk: History repeats itself at the Michigan Marathon
April 6, 2002 - By Mike Muha
A racer in a blue suit came to a stop a couple hundred feet away, and simply collapsed into the snow bank. I initially thought it was someone who had finished who was just clowning around. But he wasn't moving. I decide I better check him out, skied over, and said, "You alright?"

Fallen Trees & The Great Bear Chase
March 11, 2002 - By Greg Worsnop
...Saturday morning dawned with 30 MPH winds 45 mph gusts, 10 degree temps and blowing snow (wind chill is a figment of weather peoples' imagination). Its a good thing this is a winter sport or it would have been a son of a gun to ski...

At Sweden’s 2002 Vasaloppet
The Oldest, the Largest, the Longest, and arguably the Best Nordic Ski Race in the world.
March 10, 2002 - By Mark Madorski
...After the first 30 kms, I looked at my watch and said, 1/3rd done. This was a fine piece of information until it hit me that I still had 60 kms to go and I had never skied 60 strait kms before let alone the 90 I was trying to do here. How should I feel? Who knows?...

Congratulations to Michigan Junior Olympics Racers

Bike Tactics at the Michigan Cup Marathon (But make sure you know where the finish is...)
March 2, 2002 - By Mike Muha
...
After a couple more kilometers, the trailing pack looked like they were starting to pull us in, especially in the uphills. Bob Smith was pulling the pack. I saw Bob do this in the White Pine Stampede: When he gets the scent, he just won't stop. We slow down, catch our breath, recover, and let the pack catch us....

An Open Letter to Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, about Illegal Drug Use.
Feb 28, 2002 - By Ernie Brumbaugh
Jacques, I am writing to express my opinion about the cross country skiing medals won by Muehlegg, Lazutina and Danilova. With a haul of 4 golds, three silvers and a bronze, I find it appalling that they were only stripped of two gold medals. Any athlete found using illegal drugs should be stripped of all medals won in those Games and removed from eligibility from participating on all subsequent Games. More...

Crystal Pursuit & Relays
Feb 21, 2002 - by Sara Cockrell

If you weren't participating in the Olympics, or watching as a spectator, then Crystal Mountain was the place to be last Sunday. Susan Brian's staff at Crystal put on another superb weekend of XC ski racing,... with great grooming, course monitors, well-marked trail & map, excellent timing, a bounty of raffle prizes (thanks to Crystal, Brick Wheels, Swix, Fischer & Salomon), and an awards ceremony with lunch...

Brockway Mountain Challenge
Feb 16, 2002
While many areas in the Midwest were lacking snow, Brockway Mountain had a good snow base for the Challenge event. Race participants enjoyed excellent, fast skiing conditions, thanks to a fresh covering of lake-effect snow and a piston bully groomed course. Skiers from throughout Michigan's Upper Peninsula, northern Lower Peninsula, and Wisconsin participated in the 15 kilometer race across the top of Brockway Mountain and down an exhilarating, steep descent to the finish line in the town of Copper Harbor...

Waxing Nightmare Greets Racers at 2002 Grand Travers Classic
Feb 10, 2002 - By Mike Muha
Waxing conditions took a radical change an hour or so before the start of the 16 Km Grand Travers Cross Country Classic on Sunday Feb 10, creating a last minute nightmare. The snow started out course, crusty, and moist, the legacy of sunny and near 40 F temperatures on Saturday. Temperatures were around 32 F - klister conditions. And then it began to snow...

The 2002 White Pine Stampede Shortened to 33K
Feb 4, 2002 - By Mike Muha
A lack of a major sponsor and spotty snow conditions leading up to the week of the White Pine Stampede threatened the race, but a core of dedicated volunteers and a little help from Mother nature allowed the race to go off successfully. Beautiful weather greeted us in the morning, mostly sunny skies with the temperatures rising out of the high teens and into the mid-to-high 20s...

Chestnut Hill was my first race using a new Polar S-710 heart rate monitor which captures heart rate data every 5 seconds.  It stores many hours of data which can then be uploaded to a computer and saved in a workout diary and analysis program that Polar provides...
