The first annual Black Mountain Nordic Classic ski race is set for 10:00 A.M. on Saturday March 6th. The race will take place at the Black Mountain Recreational Area which is situated 12 miles SW of Cheboygan and 20 Miles north of Rogers City. The 30 km race is destined to become a favorite among classic style skiers. The Chateau Restaurant and Lodge on Trout Lake will be the host for the race. The mass start will begin on Trout Lake at the base of Black Mountain and wind through the scenic Black Mountain Recreational Area. Beautiful views of Black Lake will greet skiers as they crest the many hills which are sure to make this a challenging race for both competitive skiers and those wishing to tour the side by side double tracked route. Four aid stations will be available along the well marked trail.

The race covers a broad expanse of land with half of the race in Cheboygan County and half in Presque Isle County. The final six km of the race is characterized by a roller coaster set of hills with a large net drop in elevation thus ensuring an invigorating finish.

All pre-registered participants will receive an all cotton commemorative, specially designed t-shirt. The overall men's and women's champions will receive a quality set of Woodstock wind chimes. Plaques and medals will be distributed to the various age groups with placement based on the number of participants. A post race luncheon will be provided by the Chateau and free to race participants.

A 10 km tour will also be available. The non-competitive tour will offer no awards. However, a shirt and luncheon will be provided with registration.

Although every race is contingent on the availability of snow, March races are especially prone to cancellation. Historically, however, Eastern Northern Michigan is blessed with good snow in March with Black Mountain being especially good at maintaining skiable conditions throughout March. Those wishing to stay the weekend may wish to try the 10 km skate only loop which starts near the Chateau. The loop is groomed for skating only and is as challenging and fun as any short course in the state.

Anyone wishing additional information, lodging or registration should contact the Presque Isle county tourism council at 888-854-9700 or log-on to their website at www.presqueislemi.com.
